Whither?

iowa-vs-ohio

In Doctrine and Covenants 80:3, the Lord says: "Whether [you go] to the north or to the south, to the east or to the west, it mattereth not."

Well, it mattereth to me. But either way, I'm goin' east!

I've spent the last 4-5 months of my life trying to figure out where Camber and I are going to be spending the next two years of our lives. Do we go to the University of Iowa, or to the Ohio State University (and yes, they call it the Ohio State University. If you get that wrong they'll throw these dark little nuts at you and toss you down a well).

So far we just can't decide. Do we go to the less expensive option (Iowa) even though it is slightly lower in the rankings? Or do we go to the more expensive and higher-ranked Ohio? Choices, choices. Here's my current break-down of each school:

Mascot: Iowa takes the cake. Who wants a nut as their mascot?

Colors: Iowa again. Black and yellow is much better than red.

Football Team: Ohio takes this one. But they're also more cocky.

Zoo: I've heard Ohio has a great zoo. It wins.

Weather: Tie. Both places have winter weather than can cause serious injury or death within a matter of minutes.

Location: Tie. Just like weather, there are serious negatives here as well. Iowa has the distinct disadvantage of being located in Iowa, while Ohio suffers from being located in Ohio. It's a lose-lose as far as that goes. But hey, Arizona State rejected me, so I'll have to forfeit my tan.

So I turn to you, faithful friends: what's the best way to make the decision? What would you base it on? (I'm leaning toward school colors as the deciding factor...)

  1. First of all...please don't be one of those people (couples!) that says...I don't have time to "talk" to you...just check my blog. Bitter I tell you...bitter:(

  3. You're MOVING?

Glad you started a blog to keep us up to date with what's going on!

If I was you I would pick whichever one made me feel more at home. That probably matters more than ranking anyway in the end.

  5. If I had to pick the one that made me feel more "comfortable," it would have to be Iowa. At least right now. I'll probably make a decision sometime next week. I'll keep you posted!

  9. Some more things to consider:
Is either school in the vicinity of a good mountain range? Cuz you gotta have mountains.
    Which campus is prettier?
Which school has a higher percentage of good Chinese restaurants in its vicinity?

  10. To answer your questions:

    (1) Ohio has the Appalachians only about 1.5 hours away, and they are beautiful, while not tall.

Iowa is flat. There is nothing. Flat, flat, flat. Like the world. (It's still flat, right?)

    (2) In terms of campus, Iowa is much prettier. The building are almost universally a classical revival style (with columns and the whole bit!).

    (3) I'm not so into Chinese, so I will ignore this question. :)

  11. Isaac,

You left out a few very important things-

    10. Ohio may be in Ohio, but Ohio is closer to NY, DC and other cool places like Sandusky Ohio where the worlds largest indoor water park is located.
    9. Ohio colors are not red, they are SCARLET and gray.
    8. Cardiac canyon.
    7. 3 international airports nearby
    6. Jimmy Johns
    5. Even guys in wheelchairs here can whoop you in ping pong.
    4. Ohio is a swing state, Iowa is not.
    3. Buckeye's may not be a great mascot, but they sure do make great chocolates.
    2. We are here.

    1. The gospel truth:
    Iowa:
"WHAT is the will of the Lord concerning [Isaac] (here I take liberty via 1 nephi 3:19) in the Territory of Iowa?" D&C 125:1

    Ohio:
"but thou [Isaac] art called to go to the Ohio" D&C 39:14 and 7, count them 7 other references!

Really, how much more of an answer can you get?

  12. Ohio has Cedar Point - home of some of the best roller coasters in the country. Pretty good excuse to come visit you and spend some time upside down going 80 mph. Iowa has .....hmmmmmm.... CORN. But wait, they also have.......CORN...... and then in the winter, they have........NO CORN. Ohio gets my vote! If you think Provo is cold in the winter, you ain't seen nothin' yet!!
